Sunflower Giveaway

The "Let's make Stanley Sunny" Challenge

It's been a miserable damp winter so far.

So the SRG want to promote a "Summery Sunflower Stanley" for 2026.

Sunny Sunflowers

What we are doing?

Each year the SRG provides FREE Sunflower grow packs to brighten up our community.

This year we want to go even further and get more residents involved.  This is being approached using a number of strategies.

  1. Distribution of Sunflower seeds at Local Schools, Nurseries and Activity Groups to actively engage our younger residents in appreciating the benefits of bringing colour and life to the area. Planned but TBC are:

    • Kingsland School

    • Grove School

    • St Peters School

    • Willow Tree Nursery

    • Stepping Stones Nursery

    • Scouts

    • Brownies and Rainbows

  2. Distribution of Sunflower seeds at Hepworth House Care Home to actively engage our older residents who already appreciate the benefits that growing flowers can bring to the area and will enjoy taking part.

  3. Open day at Stanley St Peters Church Lunch Club to allow other local residents to take part. (Date and time TBC)

  4. Open day at Stanley Library to allow other local residents to take part. This will take place as part of the Craft Time session on Saturday 28th March between 10:30 and 12:00.

  5. Residents can promote the campaign by letting their neighbours and friends know how to participate.

  6. Residents can also be proactive by purchasing their own seeds and growing the Sunflowers.

What we are providing?

We are providing 2 FREE Sunflower seeds together with a small pot filled with compost per participant.  Basic instructions are provided on how to give your seeds the appropriate level of TLC to become mature and majestic flowers.  As the seeds germinate and grow, you will need  to pot on into large pots and eventually a flower bed or planter.

Where should I put my Sunflower?

Once the seeds have reached a suitable size to be planted in flower beds or planters, then we suggest you place these in your front garden to be visible to and make as many residents as possible smile.  Of course you can still put them out in your back or side gardens.

Sunflower Planting Instructions

  • Sow 2 seeds in a small pot a little apart.  Keep compost moist but do not over water and they should appear 14 - 21 days later.

  • After seedlings have grown stronger, remove the weakest one leaving just one in position. (You can save both but not in the same pot).

  • Keep moist and weed free for a few more weeks, then re-plant into its final planting place - either a large pot or garden bed.

  • Sunflowers need to be kept watered and fed regularly.  Stake and tie-in the plant as it grows to keep it supported and upright.

  • Flowers June -Sept.
