The Big Plastic Count
Calling all community groups across the UK!
Get counting from 9th to 15th March.
We’re all doing our bit to recycle – but plastic is still everywhere. The truth is, recycling alone can’t solve the problem when so much plastic is being made.
The UK creates more plastic waste per person than almost any other country. With plastic production set to triple by 2060, we need urgent action. By taking part in The Big Plastic Count, your community can push the government to do just that. It’s a simple, powerful way to bring everyone together. And it’s fun, too!

Blue Plaque Event at Hatfeild Hall
Unveiling of a Blue Plaque to three Pioneering Political Suffragists.
Hatfeild Hall on Tuesday 10th March 18:30
Gwendoline Beaumont, Florence Beaumont and Dame Millicent Garrett Fawcett’s political legacy to equal franchise will be marked with a blue plaque in an evening of celebration at Hatfeild Hall on the 10th of March, hosted by Dream Time Creative, as part of 2026 International Women’s Day Celebrations.
Hatfeild Hall, home to the Beaumont family between 1899 and 1922 was a nationally significant regional centre for the campaign for Votes for Women. With momentous visits from the leader of the National Union of Women’s Suffragist Societies confirming Wakefield’s importance, Millicent Fawcett’s name will also appear on the plaque, something both the Directors of the hall, and the family are delighted with.
Here is a recent press article about the event.
Honouring a political legacy: Blue plaque unveiling at Hatfeild Hall
Tickets for the event are just £10 and can be obtained by calling the office on +44 1924 377943 or by emailing events@hatfeildhall.co.uk

Hanging Baskets
We are very pleased to announce that, once again, we have ordered the hanging baskets to be displayed around the village during the summer months.
The generosity of our loyal sponsors year on year is always much appreciated and without them we would not be able to have anywhere near as many as we do. If you are one of our sponsors, we will be in touch soon with all the details and hopefully, add you to the list once again.
Anyone else wishing to sponsor a basket in memory of a loved one, or to advertise a business, mark an anniversary or just to be a part of making Stanley a beautiful place to live, should contact us through this link for more information. The cost is less than £1 a day plus a small one-off payment for a plaque if required.
The baskets go up on lampposts around the beginning of June and we are confident they will look superb as they always do.

Community Litter Picks
Stanley Resident’s Group organise community Litter Picks at various times in the year and publish dates here on the website and on our Facebook page, along with our banner and on the noticeboard in the centre of the village. We take pride in trying to keep Stanley free from litter and a lovely place to live.

-
A different area of Stanley is the focus each time and we encourage as many of the community as possible to help us. Families are welcome.
-
Equipment is provided to use on the day, but we advise sturdy footwear and suitable clothing for the weather conditions. Personal Litter Hero kits are available FREE of charge from Wakefield Council. Click here for details. Note that the Council have a temporary shortage of kits but expect to have new stock in April. You can still request now.
-
Citizen Coins are awarded to all volunteers on our Litter Picks.
-
Our next community litter pick will meet at the Community Garden on Lake Lock Road opposite the Library for a short safety briefing.
The Great Sunflower Giveaway Event
We will be giving away planting packs of Sunflower seeds once again for families in Stanley to grow at home and make the village look beautiful.
See the Events Calendar for more details on how to get your FREE seeds.
The Great Sunflower Giveaway
Sunday 6th April 10 till12 noon.
We will be giving away planting packs of Sunflower seeds once again for families in Stanley to grow at home and make the village look beautiful. We have been doing this since Covid years and it always proves popular with the children, many of whom follow through by entering their flower head in the village Flower Show in August. Find us at the Community Orchard on Mount Road.

-
We would love it if as many people as possible joined in and grew sunflowers at the front of their property to flood Stanley with SUNFLOWERS.
-
Sunflowers are often used as a symbol of Positivity and Joy.
-
Families will be able to collect a pack from the Community Orchard on Mount Road on 6th April between 10 and 12 noon.
Following on from this event, note that we have just a few ready potted up seeds left. While they last, feel free to pick a pot up from the Community Hub outside the Willow Tree Nursery on Lake Lock Road.
